Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to outline education funding details Feb. 24

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Education Commissioner Penny Schwin are expected to present legislation detailing the proposed new funding formula for students next week.

Both Lee and Schwein are expected to present key aspects of the new formula, known as the Tennessee Student Achievement Investment Formula, on Thursday, Feb. 24, the governor’s office announced Wednesday.

“We are on the verge of achieving a renewed approach to public education that prioritizes students and invests in Tennessee’s future,” Lee said in a statement. “I thank our partners in the General Assembly who have worked with us for several months to improve the way public schools are funded, and I hope we will do so during the current legislative session.”

The announcement of the schedule came on the same day that lawmakers interviewed Schwin and education officials on a number of topics, including a new funding formula and the impact it could have on teachers and local budgets.
