Live cloud broadcast signals are available for the first time at the Winter Olympics
Edge’s cloud technology debuts for exciting video
Reduce the number of staff on site with more flexibility for remote production via the cloud
BEIJING, February 17, 2022 / PRNewswire / – In collaboration with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), Alibaba’s cloud technologies are used further during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics (the “Games”) to increase broadcasting efficiency while expanding coverage of the Games. a more innovative and inclusive viewing experience for global sports enthusiasts.
Now, for the first time during the Winter Olympics, rightholders (RHBs) can receive live video streams through public cloud infrastructure – a faster option with only a fraction of the cost compared to other transmission methods. In addition, using Alibaba’s advanced cloud solutions, global sports enthusiasts can now experience exciting moments of competition from a variety of perspectives.
Janis Exarchoschief executive of OBScommented: “Against the background of COVID-19 our partnership with Alibaba Cloud continues to transform the way the Olympic Games are broadcast. OBS Cloud is one of the most profound technological changes in our work: it not only offers broadcasters unprecedented efficiency, but also provides endless opportunities for innovation and seamless delivery of Olympic excitement to as wide an audience as possible. ”
Live cloud for real-time video transmission
During Beijing In 2022, more than 20 broadcasters will use Live Cloud to receive multi-faceted signals of the Games in Ultra High (UHD) or High Definition (HD) via OBS Cloud. For the first time in Olympic broadcasting, a very new and innovative technology has been implemented that is able to make a global contribution to live content, able to effectively compete with old solutions based on special telecommunication lines and satellite communications.
As part of OBS Cloud, an innovative broadcast solution combined between OBS and Alibaba, Live Cloud was introduced as a standard service for RHB during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Prior to this technological breakthrough, broadcasters had to rely on special and more expensive international telecommunications optical circuits and spend a significant amount of time setting up equipment to send live footage halfway around the world back to their home countries. A large-scale, sustainable and secure global infrastructure is now in use Alibaba CloudAlibaba Group’s digital technology and intelligence foundation, OBS can transmit all versatile live content in high quality through a public cloud with low cost and minimal setup time.
With the benefits of low latency and high resilience, content transfer via the cloud is superior to other distribution methods when it comes to expansion, flexibility and cost. This leads to a significant increase in productivity for broadcasters, while the stability, resilience and maneuverability of the cloud also ensure the quality of broadcasting, even during the growing demand for live broadcasts of the most popular events.
As part of Live Cloud, OBS has also made the most of the speed offered by cloud delivery by introducing an app that allows broadcasters to choose which tapes they want to receive at any given time.
“Transmitting live content via the cloud is a particularly useful resource for broadcasters who cannot attend the Winter Olympics in person or afford large initial investments in local infrastructure,” he said. Selina Yuangeneral manager of international business Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. “We hope that cloud technologies will not only reduce broadcasting costs, but also strengthen coverage of the Winter Olympics, as more RHBs will be able to access live video and choose the channels they prefer. In the end, we hope that more sports fans the world can enjoy the excitement of the Winter Olympics ”.
Multi-chamber playback system and high-quality reconstruction in the cloud
To create a dynamic and engaging viewing experience Beijing In 2022, OBS and Alibaba deployed multi-camera playback systems for slow motion playback with freezing during the Games. This is also the first time that Olympic broadcasting will rely on a cloud workflow for such iterationsproviding a more exciting experience for global sports enthusiasts from all over, strategically located around competition venues.
Using Alibaba’s advanced cloud solution, videos from different curling and skating angles will be captured and compiled through the cloud edge for real-time processing and editing before selected moments are summarized as replays across the multi-faceted tape. A smooth reconstruction of the most exciting moments takes just a few seconds to prepare in the cloud and integrate as part of a live broadcast.
For less time-sensitive lighting, such as daily highlights or highlights of events, the video can be further processed in the cloud with support for Intel Xeon Scalable 3rd generation processors to create a high-quality 3D representation of sports scenes in 4K quality that makes the viewing experience more authentic and compelling. Using Alibaba’s proven cloud technology and Intel’s computing power, it takes less than a minute to capture such real 3D scenes.
Live content editing and remote production
Content +, the OBS content delivery platform hosted on Alibaba Cloud, will continue to serve RHB with broadcasting services, including access to short content, all live HD broadcasts, and all additional content produced by OBS in various sections for viewing and downloading. OBS is expected to produce more than 6,000 hours of content to improve RHB coverage during the Winter Olympics, including 900 hours of live sports broadcasts and ceremonies and an additional 1,200 hours of invisible video footage of competitions via Multi Clip Feeds – double the volume of sports provided by compared to Pyeongchang 2018.
This is also the first time RHBs have been able to create subclips from live sessions on Content +, allowing them to start editing while streaming live – a more efficient way to remotely work with large amounts of content and produce clips for distribution on social networks in the wind. OBS will also use cloud editing to speed up its publishing workflows, and a team of editors is working remotely for the first time.
Due to the increasing transition to remote production using cloud services, as well as in the context of the global pandemic, the number of broadcasters covering the Winter Olympics has fallen sharply: almost 40 percent fewer RHB staff on site Beijing compared to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
