Text description provided by the architects. Nanfang University Technology Park, located in the Nanshan Dashahe Innovation Corridor, which is developing in Shenzhen, provides an improved environment and platform for technological innovation and discovery. The 628,000-meter project, which borders the new campus of Shenzhen University, includes space for an IT incubator, an R&D office, development of medical instruments and business services on an area of 15.2 hectares. Architecture and planning strategies help improve the environment for technological innovation and discovery by creating incubators and educational platforms for entrepreneurs, researchers and startups.

The approach to architectural design recognizes nature as an invaluable resource, a repository of knowledge and a source of inspiration. At the heart of the conceptual project is the understanding that more often than not, new scientific and technical efforts seek inspiration and answers directly from nature. The urban design strategy preserves the natural features of the facility, in particular the ancient mound hill and the existing military border, while representing a central landscaped public area. The strategy of integrated design takes into account the existing natural relief and is organized together with the framework of the city – which consists of various program “areas” that frame the central green zone. The four main “areas” consist of the following and directly reflect their specific program functions:

“District of Inspiration” is an incubator of entrepreneurship
“Investigation area” – medical devices and devices
“Area of Knowledge” – Center for Entrepreneurship and District Services
“Implementation area” – outsourcing services

Areas differ programmatically and architecturally, but have a common dedicated landscape space or “urban” center – the central organizational and social element of the technology park. Architecturally, zones and buildings respond to the effects of the object and have unique massive solutions that span the central landscape, shape the outer space and define specific areas. Design innovations have included a focus on site design that has minimized changes in natural features and work with terrain to establish elevations of the building area, minimizing excavations for underground car parks.

Buildings of advanced technology are thoughtfully designed to provide a variety of spatial typologies that can meet many functional needs and requirements. From typologies of buildings with central atriums to multi-storey office spaces, the architectural approach uses the benefits of distinctive shape and geometry to open up corridors of view of the object and respond to external influences of the object.

Combinations of active and passive environmental design strategies are included, which reduces operating costs, saves energy and materials. The design presents unique, highly flexible solutions for architectural planning that meet the demanding criteria of functional use and software adaptation required for today’s innovative workplace environments. The technology park is designed as a living city – “City of discoveries, opportunities and awards.”

Tower B1. Zone B functions as the center of an entrepreneurship incubator and is symbolically considered an “area of inspiration”, encouraging discovery and innovation for IT professionals, academics, entrepreneurs and visionaries. It presents buildings and spaces that serve the purpose of integrating platforms of research and development, production and education. Tower B1 is an architecturally distinctive structure, which is considered the “Tower of Inspiration” and occupies a key place in the Technology Park. It serves as a focal point that visually defines the axis of the mound, which extends from the highest point of the top of the mound cemetery mound and extends to the eastern edge of the mound.

The Tower design solution responds to site impacts and functionality by creating a clear horizon profile and focal point. The beautiful sculptural shape of the tower reacts directly to the urban context, and its geometry reacts harmoniously with the surrounding buildings. Although architecturally responsive to the context, the shape of the tower and the floor plan are based on the goal of ensuring the highest quality workspace. A highly efficient floor plan easily combines the unique amenities of an office environment and advantageous viewing capabilities.

Architecturally, combinations of active and passive environmental design strategies provide reduced operating costs, energy conservation and conservation of materials. The design presents very flexible planning solutions that meet the demanding criteria of functional use and software adaptation required for today’s innovative workplace environments. The elegant winding shape of the tower rises 110 meters, being the center of the technology park and an iconic visual “marker” for the area.
