As part of the company’s mission to promote diversity, inclusion and equity, this year Clarivate is actively seeking input from researchers in developing countries, and especially from Africa, the Middle East, Southeast and West Asia.

Having been a pioneer in automated indexing and information retrieval since 1955, Eugene Garfield (1925-2017) developed citation databases for science that changed the way researchers searched and evaluated scientific literature. Three decades before the invention of the World Wide Web, Dr. Garfield connected a vast amount of scientific knowledge to a network. With the creation of the first index of scientific citation, he revealed the power of citation – the connection between one discovery and another, which was literally a “science network”.

Now the Clarivate product, Web of Science indexes the content and citation network of the world’s leading scientific and scholarly journals, collections and books. It is the result of the continuous evolution and innovation of the Scientific Citation Index, which Garfield introduced in 1964.

Gali GaleviThe director of the Institute of Scientific Information, part of Clarivate, said: “In 2017, Clarivate founded the award on behalf of Dr. Garfield to recognize excellence in advancing our understanding of the impact of research and innovation.

“Dr. Garfield’s vision of supporting innovation in bibliometrics has been unprecedented. He has focused on supporting scholars who research and develop new analytical methodologies, indicators and metrics to improve our understanding of how the world’s most complex problems are addressed. Also an ardent supporter and teacher researchers are beginning careers around the world, and through the Garfield Award we look forward to honoring his legacy. ”

Notes to Editors
Doctor Eugene Garfield has developed numerous citation databases that have changed the ways scientists find and evaluate scientific literature. These include the Web of Science, which indexes the content and citation network of the world’s leading scientific and scientific journals and collections, as well as Journal Citation Reports, which present journal impact factors, and other citation indicators that describe the impact of journals and how they connected to each other. These are just two of the unprecedented, valuable and enduring legacies of Garfield. Today, the Web of Science contains nearly 1.9 billion citations and is trusted by more than 9,000 leading scientific, corporate and government agencies and millions of researchers around the world.

Dr. Garfield had many interests related to information science and technology, but one of the key areas in all of them is indexing and analyzing citations and their impact on information retrieval, research evaluation, and the study of science. In particular, scientometrics shapes the future of scientific discoveries by helping governments, funding bodies, and universities around the world assess the impact of their work and investments, allowing them to allocate funding accordingly. It can also give researchers an understanding of the impact of their research and the wider field.
