CEDAR FALLS – The process of decentralizing the preparation of basic meals in public schools Cedar Falls on Monday entered its final phase.

The Board of Education has approved two contracts totaling $ 541,779 for the renovation of the kitchen at Cedar Heights Elementary School and the purchase of equipment. Improvements will affect food production, dishwashing and serving.

Failor-Hurley Construction of Waterloo won a $ 318,300 renovation contract, the lowest of two applications. Mitchell-based Boelter LLC, the lowest of the three bidders, won a $ 222,979 contract for the supply and installation of equipment.

“This is the last of the elementary kitchens,” said Daniel Gonnerman, the district’s chief financial officer. “Both (contractors) performed exceptional work around the district. We used to work with them in past projects with different elementary elements ”on improving the kitchen.

Prior to the process of repairing and upgrading equipment in the summer of 2020, food was prepared at Pete High School or Pete High School, and food was delivered to each of the six primary buildings. Bess Street Aldrich Elementary School opened in 2018 with a modernized kitchen.

Gonnerman spoke in detail about the new equipment, including a refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, garbage can, combi ovens, extractor hoods and a fire system. There will also be utensils with a sink for the pan and skillet, as well as a mobile heating cabinet and places set up to accommodate hot and cold food. “This is just a minimal list of what is actually related to this equipment,” she said.

She noted that there is a reserve fund of “about 20%” of the contract amount, or about $ 107,000, to cover any unexpected expenses. In addition, the cost of the design is estimated at $ 68,525.

The award of contracts was very close to estimates of $ 315,145 for repairs and $ 220,725 for equipment costs.

“This was provided for by our (fees for physical installations and equipment) as well as our nutrition program,” Gonnerman said. Work will begin in the week of June 6 and will be completed by August 12.

Superintendent Andy Patty told the board that the issue of allowing volunteers in schools was being considered during a meeting of primary school principals on Wednesday after the practice was stopped more than a year ago due to COVID-19 concerns. “This will be the main topic of conversation to start this process again,” he said. “We always want to balance security in our buildings, but we seem to be doing very well, and the numbers in society are tending, I think, in a positive direction.”

  • The Council has scheduled a public hearing on March 22 for the calendar year 2022-23. Classes will begin Aug. 23, the earliest day allowed by state law, and end May 30.
