According to a new report by Speechmatics, more than a third of the world’s industry experts reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their voice technology strategy compared to 53% in 2021. This shows that companies are finding ways to get around obstacles that seemed impassable less than two years ago.
The adoption of new technologies has deteriorated over the past two years as companies use them to support their dispersed workforce. Speech recognition is a leap: more than half of companies have successfully integrated voice technology into their business. However, new innovations are needed to help technology unleash its potential.
Many were optimistic in their assumption that by 2022 the pandemic would be in the rearview mirror. And although executives are still driven by COVID-19 in their daily lives, the data suggests they may have found some similarity normal from a business perspective.
However, there are obstacles that the industry needs to overcome before voice technology can fully unleash its potential. More than a third (38%) of respondents agreed that the current state of voice recognition technology does not understand too many voices. Moreover, nearly a third of respondents experienced AI bias or imbalance in the types of voices they understand when recognizing speech.
In the coming years, speech recognition technology needs to be significantly improved. Demand will only grow due to factors such as the further development of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for customer service and chatbots based on artificial intelligence and more. But while it may take years for this technology to be able to understand every voice, steps are still being taken in these early stages, and the technology of translating speech into text is on track to reach its full potential.
